Balboa Series
Balboa is a close embrace swing-era dance popularized in Southern California in the 1930s and 1940s. It is most commonly danced to traditional swing-jazz music.
Today, the dance we know as Balboa is a combination of Pure Balboa (or "Balboa Shuffle"), a chest-to-chest partnered dance, and Bal-Swing, a more open-positioned partner swing dance. It’s a beautiful dance on it’s own, and it is a great way to expand your partner dance connections.
For more, check out this "way-too-brief" History of Balboa from Jazz Dance Historian, Bobby White at his blog, Swungover.
This series will be taught by Tiffany Brantner and Lukasz Hall. $65/class, or $120 for both.
Beginner Balboa Series - 5-6pm followed by a free practice from 6-6:30 - 4 weeks: May 31, June 7, June 14, and June 28th
Curious about this whole balboa thing? This class series is designed for dancers brand new to Balboa, with no prior experience required. You’ll build a strong foundation in connection, rhythm, and core movements like Pure Bal, out & ins, lollies, and toss-outs in a supportive, progressive format. Dancers are welcome to take both the beginner and intermediate classes if they’re looking for an added challenge or want to refresh their skills. All students are strongly encouraged to attend the 30-minute guided practice session between classes to build comfort and confidence.
Intermediate Balboa Series - 6:30-7:30pm with a free practice right before from 6-6:30 - 4 weeks: May 31, June 7, June 14, and June 28th
Ready to level up your balboa? This series is for dancers who are already familiar with out & ins, toss-outs, and lollies and want to refine technique, expand variations, and gain more control and flexibility over your movement. We’ll build on your foundations, focusing on texture changes, variations, and smoothing transitions to elevate how your dancing feels and flows. You’re welcome to take both levels simultaneously for an added challenge or to deepen your understanding of the material. The 30-minute practice session between classes is highly encouraged to help integrate what you’re learning and accelerate progress.
